Visual Literacy in Tech Ed

 Definition: Visual literacy is the ability to interpret, negotiate, and comprehend information in an image.


Supporting Statement: It is important to develop visual literacy in tech ed because the field relies vastly on the ability to interpret visual images and representations.

Grade/Subject: Grade 10 Automotive technology

Objective: Given an explanation, demonstration, and diagram, the student will be able understand the basics of a disc brake system.  

Three activities:

1. Hydraulic lab: Using syringes and transparent tubing, students see the effect fluid displacement. They will also see the effect of air, trapped in the system.

2.  Labeling a blank diagram: the students will label all the fundamental parts of a brake system. Labeling should include, brake booster, Master cylinder, brake line, calipers, rotors, brake pads.

 

 

 

 

3. Bleeding the brakes of an actual car: Given a repair diagram, the students will bleed all the air out of the brake lines of a 67 mustang.

 

Evaluation of Objectives:

Attendance – Two missed classes results in a fail.

Completion of diagram – 30%

Successful bleeding procedure of brake lines – 70%
